Default Need some electrical help!

OK, as some of you folks know, I am having troubles with my brake lights blowing a fuse.

So, I decided to simply yank the wires, between the brake switch, and the rear lights, and replace them with new wires.

I expected to only find one wire, as it's only one thing on that fuse...or so I thought...

Does anyone know what all is run on the brake light fuse of a 76'? From what I can tell, it's just the reverse light, and thge brake lights, since they use the same bulbs.

But what I HAVE, right up under the brake light switch, are 3 wires...2 orange, one white. Then, attached to that, is a small cylindrical thing, with black wires going in each end, but those black wires do nothing but splice into the two orange wires. Is that a resister, or something?

HELP

Sweet. I can get rid of that, then. I have no radio, and have no futures plans for one....couldn't hear it anyway.

The only thing on the brake light fuse is the brake lights and the hazard lights --have you tried pulling the hazard flasher in the fuse box and seeing if that gets rid of the short ?

What is the hazard flasher?

Or, at least, what does it look like?

Almost nothing is labeled on my fuse box...

The link didnt work but I searched for hazard flasher and the silver can like flasher came up so it looks like your on the right track.
Unplugging the flasher will eliminate 1 circuit from the fuse.
Next you can unplug the connector that feeds the rear of the car-its just above the left kick panel just below the hood pull cable. The connector is around 10 wires, rectangular and has 2 rows of wires. Aprox colors- brown,lt green dk green, orange, yellow, pink, tan, white, blue, another white.

I just got back in, and saw your post. I already checked that harmonica plug, pulled it, cleaned it, checked the wires going into it, etc...

I pulled the flasher, as well as got rid of the radio thing. Then, I cranked her up, and did the usual battery of tests...

Put a weight on the brake, and check that....then turn the lights on, the signals, then turn the wheel, and any combo of those things, for about 20 minutes...

And the fuse didn't blow!!!!!

If this was the fix, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I've busted my hump all winter, replacing suspension odds and ends, wheel studs, etc, all so I can drive like a maniac throughout the summer.....

And then the brake lights stopped working, lol.

Removing the flasher doesnt fix it. You probably have a short in the hazard warning switch in the turn signal switch.

You mentioned the harmonica connector-thats not the connector I was talking about. The harmonica is attached to steering column-the body connector is over next to the door---but that doesnt matter now.
