Default Power strg pulley

I guess I should have posted this here instead of C3 General! :o

Let's try it again in hopes of actually getting an answer!

I got my new power steering pump, and a serp drive pulley for it, and it came with the big washer, stud and nut to press the pulley on.
However, is it supposed to be this hard?? Geez, I've got a big-as screwdriver through the pulley hole bracing against the pump body (wrapped in cloth to keep from scratching the nice polished body!) and even using a breaker bar on the nut to press it, it doesn't seem to be moving any further up the shaft. There is about a 3/8" gap between the back of the pulley and, after pulling the stud/washer back off the pulley, there is about a 1/2" gap from the top of the pulley to the top of the shaft looking down inside it.

How hard is this supposed to be?? Am I doing this right? Is there an easier way to do it?

Sorry for the newb questions, but I really, REALLY don't want to break this thing! Just want it to go together!

Thanks!

Yes - those are tough. If you go to the local auto parts store, they usually have a PS pulley tool that they'll let you check out for free.

The bolt with the washer usually won't work. The washer starts to bend, and then the pulley starts to go on crooked. Get the special tool available at any parts store. The special tool is heavy duty, and will not bend. It is a press fit, so it will be tight.
