car has been running great and today it started to sputter and i had to pump the pedal to keep it goinhg. what ya think? fuel pump or filter? car has onlt had around 300 miles in 4 years with 200 being put on in last two weeks.
"Sounds" like it was starving for some reason but if the fuel pump was going bad or the filter was plugging up I doubt the accelerator pump could fix that(it gets its fuel from the pump also). Check for vacuum leaks first.
I myself would test the fuel pressure first AND replace the fuel filter while I was under there fooling around. If pressure is ok, suspect carb problems like stuck or gummy floats/needle valves. Also suspect trash in tank...if fuel filter seems unfit. Simply blowing thru the filter will tell you if its plugged, shouldnt be any resistance at all.Keep in mind, after 3 years I would start to question the fuel being any good,or its state anyway.A cheap bubba test is to ...never mind, is dangerous.good luck with this. Start at the fuel inlet fitting at the carb, working your way towards the tank.
Thanks guys. I ran a couple of premium through it and it ran awesome. Then all of a sudden. I will start from the carb and work my way back. Where is that factory idle stop solenoid wire you speak of?

I would start with fuel filter, the fresh gas probably flushed some crap through the fuel lines with it sitting for 4 years, also may need to throw a carb kit in, may have dried up accelerator pump seal
MAY also want to check for water in the gas.....common enough especially what with that ethanol crap that IS 1/2 water to start with and is hydroscopic as hell...absorb more.....
maybe to drain the tank, and check it in a clear water glass toward the end of the draining...water sinks to the bottom....
clean the tank then...tons of fun for a nice sunny afternoon getting a tan while doing .....
Make sure your carburator isn't loose. Something so simple saved me $500 on the buy price. When I bought my 71 it ran a little rough. After I got it home I did a little checking with some carb cleaner and figured it out.
