Got a set of used Glass T-Tops for my '80. The price was right so I went for them. One is real nice but the other one needs a little help. The glass is separating and lifting from the frame in one area. Can I glue this with silicone or something and carefully clamp it or pile a few boxes of Corvette magazines on until the adhesive sets up?
Any suggestions?
Thanks, Jeff
Tuff call here! You can’t use silicone it won’t hold. To be honest You might give Dave a call at Melrose T-tops and see what he says.
I know we had a 84 and newer top here that was de-laminating and we did find an adhesive that held it, but this roof panel is plastic and our are dealing with glass.
I’m not sure they will tell you what they use, it might be a secret! But it’s worth a try.
If not then maybe my bump will get you another lead on something that will hold. What ever you do, do not drive the car with this top in unless you want to see what glass looks like floating in your rear view mirror!
thanks for the post, willcox. i just did a search for t-tops cause i need to get mine overhauled. like the OP, my right one is delaminating. i've already tried multiple glues and they just don't work. i think the main cause is it is about impossible to get a good seal without completely removing the glass to thoroughly clean both surfaces before gluing.
i'll contact melrose.
I used windsheild urethane to glue my frame back to the glass... it was messy but it has worked for the last 10 years. After i pushed the urethane in i then pushed the retaining ring down tighter on the stud to hold the frame tighter to the glass and have not looked at it since.
