Default 1977 Ground Question

Hi All,

I am following my wires and I have a mess that will get straight, eventually. I pulled off all of the black ground wires (they weren't grounds) on my wipers, blower for the heat-A/C, etc and I hooked up direct grounds to them temporarily and everything worked.
I traced a thin hot red wire that went down with the thick red wire that goes to the starter. This thin red wire was spliced to a thin black wire and has juice. Something is wrong there. I touched it to the big red wire and the starter started cranking.
Can someone please tell me where the main ground junction is on this 1977 Vette?
I think that someone might have connected the ground wire to a pos connector near the starter.

Thanks
Jack

It is common to find the ground wire from the heater motor and wipers installed in the wrong position on the starter. Its one of the most common mistakes that I see.

Can you please advise me where the wire by the starter should be connected to?

Thanks

The battery - cable & there is another ground cable from front starter mounting bracket at engine to frame.

I touched it to the big red wire and the starter started cranking.
That would be the wire to the solenoid for starting.
Not a good idea to be randomly touching wires when you don't know what they are ...

Thanks,

I was under the car and I just took the black wire off of the center pole of the solenoid (Pos) and put the ground onto a starter bolt.

Yes, sounds like you are doing good. Do you have a wiring diagram?

Hi G,

Yes I have a few different ones from printing one from this site and in a service manual. I wish that there was a color one. Last year by accident, I found online, that someone put up a schematic for a 1961 Cadillac and every wire was in the color that it is. I was able to print it up into quite few sheets of paper, align the pages up and I now have for my 1961 cadillac a color schematic that is about 2 ft X 3 ft.
