Default Back/Forth Pull on Wheel During Breaking

While fixing one problem, I stumble upon another. What a surprise.
1974 L48 Coupe, automatic.

For some reason, when I brake, the wheel pulls quickly to the right, then back to the left, and it continues to continue to pull a tiny bit left during the breaking. It's never done this before - just started today, and was quite startling the first time. I just redid the brakes a couple years ago (new master cylinder, power booster, and 4 calipers) and may have put 200 miles on it since then, probably a good bit less.

I also have about a 15 degree play in the wheel (always have), which could be making that pull more noticeable. Thoughts?

Are you leaking brake fluid?

I had a similar problem, and it turned out to be the LF caliper locking up.

That 15 degree play in the steering wheel can probably be reduced by adjusting the backlash screw on your steering box. The way I do it is I loosen the locknut, then I turn the screw in (clockwise) until I feel it start to get tight. Then I back it off a little. Tighten the locknut while holding the adjusting screw from turning. That should remove a lot of the play in the steering wheel.

It had better not be a caliper locking up, I just replaced those. I looked on my garage floor and saw no fluid. I looked at what I could see of the rotors without taking the wheels off and saw no fluid. I took the car out of the garage, and pumped the brakes a few times hard, then eased the car forward a length or two and looked back along where I had been... and saw no fluid. I guess I'll take a look at it further when I get a chance.

Edit: Thanks for the hint about the steering, I'll get on that when I can figure out where the backlash screw and locknut are. At least I know what a steering box is?

Did you replace rubber brake hoses from metal lines to calipers?

Even though the show no signs of leaking they break down internally and do

not let fluid in or out of calipers smoothly..

These lines could cause the problem you have encountered....

Good luck in solving you problem!!!!

Now that would not surprise me at all. I can't remember if I replaced those or not. I'll check it out once I purchase a jack and stands (I just moved from an apt. to a house). Thanks!
