I have a 69 Coupe with the actual steering wheel removed. I need to get further into the column ( NON Tilt & Telescope) to replace blinker and the blinker canceling doo dad. I have a Sears Balancer / Steering wheel puller but the puller just doesn't line up. Is there a specific brand of puller that any one has used that works well to get into the column? I just got the entire colum back from the paint shop so am trying to be CAREFUL.
From your posting I do not think that you are down to the locking plate. I think that you are still trying to get the steering wheel hub off of the steering shaft.
This picture shows a hub puller tool. It is attached to a steering wheel with an integral hub. You have already removed the steering wheel part. But the tool is the same to pull the hub off of the steering shaft.
I would think that the hub puller could be purchased or borrowed from most major automotive stores.
I have the tool for the lock plate removal but am not that deep yet. I will check out Auto parts store today. How hard is it to get this back together if it is so difficult to pull apart? I have a new ignition key switch and door locks, is this the time to change that out as well?
You can rent both the steering wheel puller and the lock plate compression tool from Autozone for free. If you already have the steering wheel off you only need the lock plate compression tool.
Jim Shea's papers are a must if you are going into your column.
