Concerened about the life of my new Crower solid cam i,m about to install ,the tech fellow at Crower told me about this product.
Has any one tried this stuff ?
good idea for cam breakin or gm eos I just today spoke to shell oil company and there 15w40 still has 1200 ppm of zinc and aother anti wear additive aslo talk to amsoil synthetic and got emailed a tech bulliten with all there data on it there 10 w 40 has 1378 ppm of zinc and1265 phosphorus in it and there ame15 w40hhas 1377 ppm zinc in it there RD30 racing oil 10 w 30 has 1575 zinc in it and 1424 ppm phosphorus I am looking to go with somehing of there its an synthethic oil i have a flat tappet cam theoil company are more than glad to share there specs with you on there tech lines
Vavoline racing oil has enough zddp in it also. Even it's conventional oil has enough zddp to protect cam parts AFTER it's initial break in period. This info came from a vavoline tech who stated they receive 20,000 calls a day on this subject alone on the zddp/flat tappet cam issue.
My two-cents,
As an old engine parts sales and tech guy, I can atest to the need for at minimal a break-in lubricant and a good motor oil. The tubes of lube that the cam manufacturers sell are certainly good for protecting your cam during initial start-up However, every engine oil out there has a ZDDP in it (zincdiphyelphosphate). Yes, there are varying degrees at which it is a component of the formulation, just know what you are using. Oil marketers have been steadily reducing the use of ZDDP and phosphorus as they are contributors to emmissions coming out of your tailpipe, headers, side pipes, etc. Watch for the newer engine oils coming out ..... they will be tagged as GF5. They will have reduced percentages of these and other additives. Even though GF5 tagged engine oils will be marketed as backward compatible, for purposes as your note ... protecting your aftermarket camshaft .... be careful in your motor oil selection. As for specific cam additives outside of the break-in period and normal oil you'll select, you can make the call. I don't use an additive for my solid bumpstick ... yet.
I just broke in my Crower solid cam late last year. I used Valvoline VR1 30wt and also dumped in a bottle of the Zddp+. Also, if your heads are setup for dual springs, take out the inner spring for break-in(not the dampener) and then reinstall inner spring after cam break-in. In my case, I just left them out for several weeks as it kept me honest with the right foot during engine break-in
For normal oil changes, I plan to run the additive for now since I bought several bottles. After that, I'll probably just run the VR1 30wt or 20-50wt alone unless they change the zinc content.
I was on the phone this past week with Edelbrock tech about adjusting my valves and he specifically asked me out of the blue if I was running any zinc additive. I told him I was using the ZDDplus stuff and he was pleased to say the least to hear that I was using it. The impression I got from them is that with the flat tappet cams definitely need some sort of zinc additive for regular use with todays oils readily available.
that site seems to be puffing up its product and downing other alternatives. ncrs types use rotella rated CI/J 4with no problems, recommended by several who were engineers at GM and use in their personal cars....the important part is the above rating, no the weight.
and report no problems like that site says will occur.

I run Chevron Delo 400 15-40w (Diesel Oil - the old blend) with tons of zinc additive and I also run ZDDP+.
My solid lifter cam is ages old and performs as well today as the day I put it in. I have triple springs and high pressures and all is well.
IMO it seems as if the newer camshafts are being made of inferior quality materials that are prone to losing lobes. This just happened to my friends BB cam made by a brand name manufacturer. ZDDP+ is great stuff!
Mobil 1 15W-50 Racing (only this grade), made and recommended by Mobil for flat tappet cam engines made with 1,200 PPM ZDDP (the magic number according to the experts for standard street engines), a Group IV synthetic oil, no additive needed, $25 at Walmart for 5 Qts, and used by me in my L-82 since 1986. I recently had my letter on this subject published in the July 2009 issue of Corvette Fever. Check it out for more info!
I want to thank everyone for there replies to my original question.
With all this info it makes it clear to me to go with the ZDDPlus. for sure on the breakin and more than likely continue with a good racing grade oil such as mobil 1 15/50 .
cheap insurance to protect the time and $ I put into this motor.
As for camshaft life we are still experimenting .The rollers eat up
distributor gears ,the flat tappets wipe lobes. We even had the pressed on cast gear [crane] strip out !
With the gov,t finger in our oil we must continue to pass this info on.
Some day soon the only cars on the road will be battery driven and
the last of the hotroders will be scrambleing to find fuel.Sounds like a movie I seen [mad max II] i believe.
So lets drive like we stole em till the last drop is gone.
foum is great ,thanks again
