I finally lowered my 78 back to the ground after being on jack stands for 3 months. I replaced the entire drive train (and engine/transmission) with new/rebuilt parts.
After installing the adjustable strut rods from ecklers on the rear end, I'm wondering how you adjust the rods once they're on the vehicle? It seems you would need to remove one end of the strut rod to expand or contract the overall length by screwing or unscrewing the end. Is there an easier way?
Here's a link to the adjustable strut rods I installed.
One end is a left hand thread and the other is right hand. With the ends captured, when you turn the tube they get longer or shorter as you turn them. Break the jam nuts loose and turn them.
They work like a turnbuckle. One end on each is right and the other left handed threads.
Loosen the lock nuts on each end and turn the center rod to lengthen or shorten.
Thanks everyone...I understand now! I thought it had something to do with the middle of the rod where there's a small section to set a wrench. My right wheel is noticably leaning in at the top and I wanted to get it close enough to drive to get a professional alignment.
As a starting point...set your Vette on a level surface, cut a 2 x 4 to fit on the outer edges of your rims. Use a level on the 2 x 4 and adjust the rear wheels with the top in 1/8".
Buy or borrow a set of wheel dollies. Place them under the rear wheels, lower the car, and adjust to your heart's content. Every once in a while, bounce the rear of the car to settle everything down. Works like a champ.
I use a level a carpenters square and steel rule level on floor amke sure its level then the square on the level put the level against tire then measure from square to rim top and bottom the square should be straight up and down there should be 1/8 more at the top no more that 3/16th the actual measure ment is not important just so the top measure ment is 1/8th more than bottom this gives you about 1/2 degree negative camber this is from dontov alignment 101 the paper is on there site
