They work one minute and the next they don't. It's common to both windows. Has anyone experienced this? Relay ....breaker? I'm guessing it's a heat related problem.

Heat related would most likely be the 40 amp circuit breaker but an intermittent problem could be the relay or the fuse box ignition tap(this tells the relay to turn on)
Relay maybe, but not likely. If you want to check the relay it is located on the driver side under the shifter console. It mounts to the forward support bracket. More common problems would be as listed below.
Have you checked the switches? This may just be a case of the switch contacts needing cleaned or the switch being replaced.
One other thing you might check and I have this problem on one of my cars. . . I’ll call this the big box foot syndrome! I have this! The power window harness plugs in to the fuse panel and my foot kept hitting the connector and knocking it loose. I’m 6’4” and there just is not enough leg room in there!
One question: when you try the power windows and they don’t work, do you show a amp draw on the gauge? If you show a draw then you can eliminate the switch and the wiring as the source of your problem and go straight to the motor.
If you do not show a draw, I would check the switches again and they are easy to test. You can also verify if you have power on the circuit when you check the switch. If you have power in and power out of the switch then you’ll need to pull the door panel. Once you have the motor access plate removed, pull the connector from the motor. Test the connector and see if you have power on either terminal when you push on the switch. If you have power there then you have a motor problem. If you do not have power and you do at the switch then you have something broken between the switch and the motor.
If you have power at the motor with the switch, then I want you to next run an independent ground from the motor to the car. Plug in the connector and see if the motor runs. Next. .. If you have a battery charger, hook the ground to the motor, and touch the positive to the motor. One side is up and the other side is down.
Thanks for the responses*and the schematic. That will definitely help when troubleshooting. The reason why I suspect heat is because I can drive 30 miles with the windows down, pull the windows up and if I try to bring them back down - it won't work....or vice versa. I don't suspect the switches since it effects both windows. I'll put it in a failed state and see if the breaker is outputting the 12v and go from there.
