Total timing and the timing curve is different for every engine - but the only place to make those adjustments are on the dyno. I know that sounds like a BS answer - but the best power and driveability comes from a custom tune.
Engines with big cams may benefit from using manifold vacuum vs. ported vacuum for the vacuum advance as there's more vacuum advance at idle and it helps to smooth out a "bumpy" idle.
