Default Intake Manifolds

I have a 73 with the 454BB, running a 750cfm Holley. I want to change the intake out on the engine, but am confused with the types out there. I have considered the following:

Holley 300-42, Dual plane
Wieand stealth 8019, suposedly functions like a dual and single plane
Edelbroch, both the Performaner and RPM.

Would someone that has experience with these let me know which they have had good success with and good performance or the drawbacks with each.

Thanks for your help.

What combination are you running and with what hood, I see you already have a holley on there so I'm guessing you either have an adapter or a different intake then stock currently.

Pat, I have the stock intake now with an adaptor running a Holley Avenger 770cfm. Runs very well.
The engine is basically stock except for ignition and roller rockers. It is an automatic with 3:55 gears.

Does this answer your questions?

I was in the same boat a while ago trying to put something under the stock hood, what I pretty much was told is that nothing worth a darn will fit under there, torker2 was out of the question becouse I didn't want to lose that much bottom end with a single plane, the RPM's and the stealths I was told are too tall, The regular performer if you read about them are for small port BB's not the large oval port like the stock 049 heads on a 73. My solution to this ordeal of finding something better then stock that was a dual plane was a 68 427 L-36 intake (390 horse). In 68 and 69 they were aluminum low rise large oval port intakes with a quadrajet bolt pattern (I've got a good quad so I wanted to stick with it). I haven't bolted it on yet since I just got it tuesday, but if nothing else it will shave probably 20lbs of weight, plus it should cool the intake charge down a little bit over the cast iron, hopefully will flow a little better as well since this intake doesn't have an EGR port. I don't know if this helps you or not, unfortunately there just isn't a whole lot that fits under the stock hood of a big block, an L-88 hood opens up a lot more possibilities.

By the way, how much hood clearance do you have over the holley with that adapter and are you still running the stock air cleaner assembley with the rubber seal with your setup?

I did what Pat did. Found a '68 low-rise aluminum stock intake. It fits under the hood w/quadrajet and looks good too. Only problem is that it's pretty much "finished" by 5300 rpm or so (short and flat unequal length runners). They're out there for sale. Go to Mortec.com and put and ad in the "parts wanted" section.

Hi Pat,

Your info was great. Yes, the options are limited without going to an L-88 hood. Here is the info on the Holley.
- It is the new Avenger 770cfm. The carb has all the needed vcauum ports so minimal re-plumbing is needed. Probably the only problem is the throttle cable being a little tight. A little engineering on the lines, but that's all.

- I usd the Mr. Gasket square to spread bore adaptor. It is .8" tall. Screws into the stock intake and the Holley bolts right to it.

- I had to use an aftermarket air cleaner. It is the Chevy 14" and I used a 2" air filter. All of this fit under the stock 73 hood. I guess I have 1/4 - 1/2" clearance left. (Used clay and made an impression before I slammed the hood. A hole in the hood is not neat on a vette.

Why a Holley? I liked the Avenger ads, and heard they were as Holley quotes -runs out of the box. Thay are. No problems, starts like a champ with electric choke, idles, and accelerates smoother than the Q-Jet with the vacuume secondaries.
I had many problems with the Q-Jets (have 2). Mainly they seem to have a decaying idle after 30 minutes of driving and regardless of jets, rods and rebuilds tend to run very rich. So much you can smell the exhaust, unless you screw down the idle screws and then they bog. Thanks again for your info, I will look into Mortec.
