I`m trying to save a few bucks so I painted my headers. I used high heat paint but it says its good to 1000 degrees, how hot do they get, could the paint start on fire?
I used high heat paint on my headers any it still bubbled off. Ive heard of guys slowly heating their headers. A process of idling for short periods and turning off the car, progressively getting longer and hotter and it working, but I dont believe it.
I just rapped my headers and called it a day.

Proper prep is key to painting headers as is the heat cycle to cure the paint. Removing all oils and old paint as well as sandblasting the surface for good adhesion. VHT says to have the paint either oven baked for best results or run the engine and shut it off as soon as there is any sign of smoke from the paint and that takes about 6 or so engine runs and cool down periods.
The paint shouldn't catch on fire but it will smoke a lot if you just run the engine.
