I just installed a 400 and it was running hot (220ish). I removed the stock radiator and installed a new aluminum one and am still having the same problem. I'm running an electric fan (between radiator and motor, pulling) and have installed a new thermostat and there is no vapor lock occurring.
I did have the steam holes drilled on the heads and I'm wondering if it is possible to install the head gaskets incorrectly. I'm confident that they were installed right but I'm almost at the end of my rope here.
I'm also considering moving the fan to the outsided of the radiator to push along with installing a mechanical fan and shroud.
HELP!
Thanks guys
Before you chase the temp, you should verify it is a true reading.
Some things may or may not be a problem.
Valves lash too tight
Retarded timing
rich mixture
Yes some head gaskets can be installed wrong.
Water in the oil would be a clue
220 is hot, not way hot, how "tight" was the rebuild?
The rebuild was done by a local speed shop. The car runs great until it heats up. the sending unit is new, but I can always try another one.
When it gets hot the idle goes way up and won't come down. I think it actually is getting hot.
is it at 220 when on hiway?
or is it 220 when stopped with the fan on?
or 220 all the time?
i was just going to say if the temp reads normal on hiway with good natural airflow but not on stops with fan on then your fan is not sufficient.
i would def get an infa red gun or another cheap temp gauge, hoook it up temorarily and confirm your temp.there is a million of these threads on here.. have you been through at least 5 of them and done everything in them? shrouds, radiator foam, timing, drilled stat, lower scoop, spring in bottom hose etc etc
