'75 tilt telescopic. I have to turn the wheel 3/4 turn to get the signals to cancel, is this normal? Seems like I'm always driving around with a signal on.
How far do all of you guys have to turn the wheel before it will hit the turn signal cancel spring and cancel the signal when you turn back to straight?
I don't have a '75 any longer so I can't give you a turn signal cancel angle for a Vette. My wife's Cobalt cancels at 55 degrees from a right turn, 60 degrees from a left turn. I am quite sure that all GM cars cancel in that same ballpark.
If you have to rotate more that one half turn of the steering wheel to cancel a turn, your steering column is indexed 180 degrees out.
You have a problem somewhere else in your system. You may want to check all of your components with this paper.
OK, i figured it out. I checked alignment of shafts and the chisel mark on the steering wheel hub, all were good. What i found is the lower horn contact which also has the cancel cam on the bottom of it was on 180* out. I found it will fit 2 different ways. Removed it and turned it 180* and now the signals cancel after 1/4 turn of the wheel. Much better, Thanks for the help.
I'm glad you fixed your problem. There is one thing that I don't understand. How did you get the cancelling cam (aka upper horn contact) assembled 180 degees out of phase.
The turn signal cancelling cam will only assemble to the upper steering shaft one way (flat on the cam mating to the long flat on the upper shaft). It will not slide down on the shaft far enough if it is assembled 180 degrees out. The locking plate has a raised hub. With the cancelling cam correctly assembled to the upper shaft the locking plate assembles to the upper steering shaft only one way with the raised hub lip pointing toward the driver. Again this is the only way the c-clip and spring will go together.

With the chisel marks at 12 o-clock mine had the cancel cam and the lock plate on so the clip had to be put on from the bottom instead of slipping it in from the 12 o-clock down. It was tight, but it was in there. i went for a 2 hour drive this afternoon, it sure was nice having it work right.
I have updated my Tilt & Telescoping Column 69-82 Disassembly & Repair Paper #1 at Terry Rudy's www.corvettefaq.com websight.
I have included the above grayscale photo on page 10 with the various parts called out. This should assist people in reassembling their T&T columns correctly.
