Ok probably a really dumb question. Since I have the carb off the car I need to go ahead and replace the intake manifold gasket because it is leaking from the front rtv bead. I have only placed the distributor in when the engine is at top dead center on the compression stroke. Where at do I mark the dizzy to just pull it out and put it back in without having to turn the motor?
You can make a mark on the distributor body and intake, and then make another on the distributor body where the rotor is. Align all these marks and it should be in the same spot.
I just set the thing to TDC #1 compression before I pull it and figure I gotta time it anyway, so...
What I have done it make a mark on the dist. body and the intake manifold with a punch or small sharp chisel. This is so you can aligh the body in the exact same spot it is in now. Then before you remove the dist., with the cap off, lay a straight-edge on the rotor and note where it is pointing. Put a piece of painter's (blue) tape at some convenient place the straight-edge is pointing. Do it in a way you can duplicate the position when you put it back in. If you get it off one tooth, it should be readily apparent. The more critical mark is aligning your marks on the dist. and intake, as a small error there will effect your timing.
Others will probably chime in with different, and possibly better methods, but this worked for me.
