The drivers door on my 81 wont stay open on its own. I know it is some kind of a spring problem but how do i fix it?
Buy a new spring and the spring installation tool. If you don't buy the tool chances are you will be posting about how hard it is to install the spring.
My passengers door on my 81 wont open from the outside. No problem opening it from the inside. What parts are bad and what is the fix?
There could be multiple causes. I would first check to see if the outside
handle is actually working. These will break inside and the rod is not
moving the latch. Take your door panel off and take a look to see whats
happening.
Thanks for the link, Gary. I have same prob as beerrun on driver door of my 72; after reading the article, it looks fairly simple to correct.
The author could have detailed the actual hinge spring installation picture mo' better by showing what the bottom of spring hooks to. I'll look at my pass side to figure it out.
The warning the article stated about not using the specific installation tool was amusing. The "tool" looks like a standard 8" flat blade screwdriver with a bend near the tip. Not exactly a complex design, eh?
Thanks again for the info. I hope that fixes any of us with same problem.

Here's what the tool looks like. Basically a made in China screw driver with a few bends. I'm sure you can make one from a heavy duty screw driver. The location and angle of the bend is critical so it will clear the door pillar as you hook it around the spring. I replaced one on my 78' with this tool and it was very simple.
