does anyone know of a "fool proof" way to adjust the steering box on an 82? The steering feels like it's way too tight and doesn't seem to want to return to center when I let go of the wheel.
Any thoughts on this?
Thanks Guys!
The only "fool proof" way is to pull the steerin gear box out of the car and adjust it to specification with an inch-lb torque wrench. There are many discussions on adjusting the gear in the Chevrolet Overhaul Manuals. Or just send it to Gary.
1. The not self centering is more likely to be castor / camber settings on the front wheel alignment.
2. Hard steering: do you have power steering ? - Does it want to pull one way all the time (that could be the PS valve) - or maybe the power steering mechanism needs looking at. If it is non-powered, then you are back at the steering box.
