Hello there
I did mine a couple of weeks ago,I dont have cruise control,so that maters.Start and hook the cable up to the transmission first then pull it up to behind the motor ,and push it thru that little hole. You will find out it is gonna be hard to get it thru all that wiring under the dash ,but you can do it! Some good advise is to take your seat right out of the car ,so you can lay on your back to get your hands up in there. There is only 4 bolts that hold your seat in.
I just removed and lubed speedo cable on my 70 coupe. You dont say if your intending to replace inner cable and outer casing. No real need to replace outer casing, just inner. Maybe a good cleaning and new grease will do it for you. First, you must remove the cable from the speedometer. this is the toughest part. I moved my dash ahead and out completely to rebuild odometer. YOu don't need to do this. however. Remove seat is good idea. lay under there, find cable where it goes into speedo. Push on a clip that has like a button on the bottom of cable, then the cable pulls back. Then grip the inner cable with needle nose pliers and pull it out. Be a good idea to remove at trans, but I don't think it is essential. clean cable good with degreaser. inspect. if it looks at all frayed, then replace inner cable. Lube bottom 3\4 of cable with white litheaum grease, they say. Dont grease the top 1\4 of the cable very much, as too much grease could "pump upwards" into your speedo. They say grease liberally so the cable doesn't bounce around dry inside housing. once new or lubed old cable back in, simply find speedo fitting and push on. It snaps into place.
bhawk is right! I too replaced my 70 cable. I took off the top dash and loosened the RH lower dash assy. Then I disconnected the cable assy. from the transmission, (4spd.) I just ran the new cable through the existing cable casing. Mine broke at the speedo side (red plastic part) so I was careful when I reassembled. I took off the tranny side because I wanted to make sure it fit properly! Hope this helps! It was a fairly painless process and my state inspection shop thanked me with a new shiny sticker :D
Mr. Gearhead has the best plan. I just re-installed my speedo and tach cables this morning. I had the dash out. When I put it back in place, I connected both cables. It would be very difficult to unclip the cable without moving the drivers side dash guage cluster forward about 1-2 inches. This is done as Gearhead says, remove or at least loosen upper dash pad, then remove screws from drives dash pad, and screws to centre guage cluster. to pull guage cluster forward, probably have to remove the 2 bolts holding steering column, as once they are gone, column can be pushed down about half inch, getting clearance to pull drivers dash forward, enough to get your hand in there to remove cable clips, etc. Good luck.
