How does the speedometer cable disconnect from the gauge? Mine broke and it still makes a grinding/whining noise sometimes and it is VERY annoying. Just want to disconnect it until I get a new one.
Here's a photo of my 71'. In the center (to the right of the Odo reset cable) where the cable attaches you'll see a tab, push the tab and the cable will pull out. It will take skinny hands to reach under the dash. I usually take the seat out any time I have to get under the dash.
Skinny hands is right. I usually can reach one hand under the dash to push the tab, then use a long pair of pliers to pull the cable back as I can't get both hands up there.
I took the wiper facia off reached in and had someone pull the cable from the engine compartment to get it off. then fished the new one in place and pushe the cable from engine side.
Worked for me.
Actually Duke it wasn't that bad at all. Just reached up with a small hand (not mine) and twisted until it came off.
Now it will be quiet for my trip with the wife. We are going 800 miles for a car show this weekend. Car is polished up and ready to go. Just waiting for the wife to get off work on Thrusday and we had out for an afternoon drive to get a jump on the long drive.
