Amp gauge maxed

Need some help, I have a 81, sitting in traffic yesterday temp went up about 20 degrees and about the same time the amp gauge maxed out at 18 and stayed there came home parked it went out today after work started it up and same thing maxed out. Alternator was so hot you couldn't touch at all. Needle does go back to 0 when you turn it off. Thanks for any help.

An '81 should have a voltmeter, not an ammeter. Sounds like the voltage regulator in the alternator has failed.

Take the alternator to NAPA or other local parts store and have it tested. If it is bad, get a replacement.

I had a 74 a dime had fell in the cigarette lighter and did the same thing as yours

Thanks to all for the help, if I do need a alternator it'll be a new one. I know people will say a rebiult one is just as good but I prefer to go with a new one.
