Default Starter wiring

I'm wiring up my starter, well, trying to and It's a little cofusing. I have Doc rebuilds sheets and it's not helping. The battery +pos is a no brainer. I have a white thats not on his diagram and a red that is spliced about a foot up thats blue. Here's a pic. Does the black with the large connector go to the starter bolt? I also am going mini starter and HEI.

Also what are these wires? TCS solenoid or relay ?

HELP please...

Default Follow the splice back and see what the original color is.

The black wire on the bottom of the top picture goes to the starter bolt, it is the ground for the wiper motor.
On the starter the top large terminal get the battery positive and a 12 gauge red.
The small "S" terminal (closest to the block) gets the purple wire. That wire comes from the ignition switch to activate the starter solenoid when the key is turned to start.
The small "R" terminal (outboard side) gets the small yellow.
Not sure what the white wire is, and in your second picture the purple looks blue.PG.

I'm chasing the white wire to find out whre it goes. Not sure it should be white. I'm assuming from what you're saying that red going to the solenoid connection closest to the block should be purple. It is spliced.

In the top pic the two reds with the large connector look like they go to the big solenoid terminal with the battery pos. hook them up and use a test light to see which of the other wires get power when the switch it turned to start.

Unfortunately I'm not at the stage to throw a battery in it yet. Too many loose wires under the dash, thats not there right now. That would be too easy with my meter. Nothing is that easy on a frame off.

Now you know where the 2 large terminal wire go.
On the other 2 one of them will go up and attach to the pos terminal of the coil-this should be a yellow as Pete said-use your ohm meter and check for continuity.
The other should turn into a purple and go to the bulkhead connector.
Purple wire goes to S terminal on solenoid
Yellow goes to R term

The mini starters (at least the Powermaster) only have a main terminal for the battery wire and a blade terminal with a screw on it (guess to connect either way). They don't have a place for the R terminal. Which wire would go on the blade terminal? The OP is using a mini-starter as well.

BB72, did a PO install an electric fan at one time? My son did and there was a white wire that we had to run to the starter. Just a thought.

I found another wiring diagram and the white wire looks like it goes back to the coil. I'm going to get some more wiring done and a battery so I can actually test this.

What diagram did you find that shows a white wire going to the starter, I'm sure the Docrebuild diagram is correct with red, yellow, purple and black going to the starter ?

There's no yellow, I'm thinking the white should be yellow, I have to follow it back .

If you don't mind me asking a question as well, I went to connect my mini starter and I have the battery wire which goes to the main, larger post. I also have a red and black wire spliced together with a large "O" connector and I believe it also goes on the main post. Then I have a red wire with a small "O" connector that I think goes to the bladed post. Those are the only wires on my 76. Am I correct in the connections? Thanks.

I believe I have the same as you. I ohmed out the white wire and my thoughts were correct. It's going right up to near the coil. I now have a black ground going to the starter mounting bolt, one big red connector and the battery cable going to the large main post and the small red connecter going to the smaller(only one left) post. Done....

I guess the black wire is the ground. I wonder why it is splice with the red wire going to the main post. Should it be going to the mounting bolt?

I'm not sure on the black but I have two wires spliced into one going to the + battery lug on the starter.

I think a lot of our problems come from somebody getting in there and making thier own changes.
