Hi Guys, I have a BB 1969 390 horse (driver). I'm thinking of replacing my points & condensor system to a Corvette Ignition Points Conversion Kit by Pertronix. On the website they have 3 different types of systems listed. The Corvette Ignitor I, II, & III. Any you guys have any insight or experiance with these systems? They make it sound great on the internet. Was just wondering if its really worth the investment, and which system to choose from?
I've used the Ign I and II. One you have to remove the dist to install and one you dont. Not sure which one is which as far as the numbers are concerned. I prefer the one that you have to remove the dist because the other one does not give instant start up unless you leave the key in the on position for a second before engaging starter.
The Ignitor I suffered from some failures if the key was left on; the II added circutry to fix that. The III just looks like the most current stuff.
IMHO, pull the distributor regardless. Now is the time to find out if the bearings are shot and you need an overhaul, and a great time to set the end play.
I've installed a few of the II's, including one in my '72 C10 with a warm 355. It's been a complete champ for 6 years now.
It's a 1-piece; it's possible to get it over the shaft top by removing the rotor, but I found it easier to just pull the distributor regardless.
Thats the one I like, the other one that gets its signal off the points cam doesnt fire right away when stating the engine. The tech at Pertronix told be me to pause in the ON position before engaging the starter on that model.
