I have an 81 can with 5 hoses.
1 hose from carb through Thermal valve to can.
This is the signal hose that opens the valve for purge.
The valve holds vac, so this is good right?
another hose from can that hooks in with the pcv valve into the
throttle plate. This, I believe is the line that purges the can when the signal valve is opened with vacuum.
Can someone confirm or deny this?

Would help if I could. My 79 had this many lines, but I ripped them all off. When I put it back together I'll just run the pvc line over to it to pull in the tank fumes & not worry about anything else. I'm sure someone will check tonight.

Short answer would be yes your right the PCV hose is going to do the purging. I don't have an 81 to look at but I have my 81 manual. I have a drawing of the system and I have an emission label. Its still not totally clear enough to say for sure but I still think your correct. The unclear part I think you can clear up. You have 2 control valves on the top of the canister-each one will have a control hose-one of the control hoses goes as you said to the thermal valve-where does the other control valve hose go ? Does it go to the base of the carb (most likely)or does it T in to the purge line that goes to the PVC hose (not likely)? If it goes to the base of the carb then you were correct.
Not sure why there are 2 control valves but would guess its some kind of balancing or cycling so the PVC system is not starved.
