Default Yet another wheel size question

I want to put 17's/18's on my 1980. I've read that my backspace for the rear will need to be 5.25" to 5.5". I've just put in new suspension. I'd really like to keep the rear sway bar. Is this possible?

What size trie and width rim are you going to run. If you stay the stock size of an 8 inch rim everything will be fine. Stay with a 4 inch backspace on an 8 inch rim. It gets more difficult when you start running a 9 to 10 inch rim with wider rubber.

I was hoping on 18x10 rears with 275/40's. Should I reduce the backspacing to 5 or less?

No. I am running a 275 40 18 on a 18X10 rim. You need a 5.5 backspacing. The ebrake bracket will have to be moved and the stock sway bar will not fit.

Your 80 should already have the e-brake bracket relocated. For 9.5 wheels or wider, you could modify your sway bar like I did,,,,,,,,,or not. You could run a dual mount spring and no sway bar.

Thanks guys.

Bee Jay. I looked at what you did and that's definitely an option. I put sport/touring suspension in for road trips but like to auto-x when I can so I'd really like to keep the sway bars. I guess I'll have to get the wheels on there and see how much room there is.
