I have priced an entire exhaust system..(Straight duals) and have been getting prices in the $500.00 range if the studs don't break on the stock exhaust manifolds :crazy: ..So now I am considering sidepipes and have some question...Does anyone make a direct bolt on for a 79 350/auto ??Or am I going to have to cut and weld....If they do make a direct bolt who makes it??How much does it cost????And where can I order it??? :) :) And does anyone have any feeling pros or cons about sidepipes??Thanks in advance

I ran a set of Dynomax Side pipes for quite some time. I purchased them for $210 from Jeg's ( http://www.jegs.com ). I had to slightly modify the pipes to get them to fit just right but it wasn't an impossible task. Pictures of these pipes can be seen on my web page in my signature below.

Hooker Header side pipes are another alternative. I believe the entire header/side pipes/mufflers kit costs between $800-$1000. These are pretty much a direct bolt up.

Factory style side pipes are another option. I really don't know how much these cost but Eckler's ( http://www.ecklers.com ) carries them.

My opinion on side pipes is.....I LOVE THEM! I love them so much so that I am putting a set of Hooker Header side pipes on whenever I drop the big block in. The look and sound of the side pipes is priceless. You will however have to watch your legs entering and exiting the car...the pipes get VERY hot.

 

1969 factory style pipes with fiberglass covers run right in the $1000.00 kit range or with chrome reproduction covers run about $3000.00 kit. Both are available from most Covette supplies vendors. Maybe check Jegs or someone like that for Hooker Style sidepipes/headers.

I have written numerous posts on low buck side pipes, giving tons of insight. I put my set together for around $250 using decent swap meet parts. They were a bolt peice, that needed a little modification and tweaking to be pleasing to the eye and satisfy my liking.

Duals have the advantage. The best exhaust runs straight back through the crossmember w/ mufflers at the end.

Probably came from 50s Lakes pipes which were run open. Then when mufflers are added stock type are very restrictive. Header type sidepipes & better mufflers will help. Restrictive, in the way & burns are cons. Seems to me a guy has to really like side pipes to have them.

I have sidepipes on my 69. They sound great. The previous owner bought them from Ecklers or a place like that. I purchased the fiberglass covers and had them striped and painted. They look pretty good. I later bought the original covers for $100.00. They had been spray painted black. They need to be repaired and maybe rechromed. What I really wanted to tell you about the sidepipes is that they are really loud. Dont get me wrong, they make my ZZ4 sound awesome. With the T-tops installed and the windows rolled up, an hour ride is sometimes painful. The sound bounces around the interior of the car. You then can also replace the fiberglass panel to get rid of the cut outs at the rear of the car. That really looks good....

Everyone has tried to find a place to chrome thier fiberglass covers. So far every place says it can't be done.

YES, you can use mid year chambered pipes on your C3 with little modification.
YES, I do use them on my C3.
YES, they are the 69 factory type
YES, they are small block pipes bolted to factory rams horns.
YES, they are practically a bolt on piece.
YES, I have written extensive info on how to specifically do this operation in a former post somthing like "Cheap side pipes" Use my handle to search and find side pipe topics I have responded to.
NO, sidepipes are not loud in my opinion.
NO sidepipes under fiberglass covers do not get hot and do not cause leg burns.
YES, you can wisely shop around and get a set of pipes and covers for under $300. But it takes patience and wise swap meet part buying.
YES, this topic needs to have all the thread posts assembled into a frequenlty asked question so guys can find all this info in one location for a complete reading of info shared.a

I'm curious why you feel duals have the advantage (over side pipes). I would think a properly designed side exhaust system w/headers would have equal performance as a dual underbody exhaust. The 67 L88 ran side exhaust at LeMans when just as easily it could have run underbody exhaust.

Although I have no supporting data to the contrary, I believe a well designed side exhaust system can and does make as much HP as an underbody exhaust. I will accept that side pipe mufflers are generally more restrictive due to size constraints compared to a large case muffler, although the auger style mufflers do not appear to cause a significant restriction.

ML67, how do the spiral cores work? Are they somewhat quiet? What inlet/outlet size do you use? I'm trying to quiet down my '65 sidepipes and it looks like the Morosos will fit in line before my stock chambers.

 

Does anyone know when the posts about c2 pipes on a c3 was posted? I did a search and came up empty handed.
