Default break caliper question

i just took the caliper off the front of my 1980 vett and took the caliper apart, going to rebuild it.

my question:when i took two of the pistons out of one side of the front passanger caliper,it has a very very shiny sleave in it would this be stainless steel lined,it is shinny all over the sleave not just where the piston travels but at the ends as well.

i wish i had a camera but mine is messedup,i would post a picture if i could.

does a stock steel caliper with the steel for the piston to travel in have a sleeve.

if i do have stainless steel calipers do i have to hone them out to put new seal kit in them?

thanks for the help

It sounds like you have the stainless lined calipers. look along the edge and you can see a parting line between the casting and the sleeve. Make sure you clean them really well, and blow out the passages as I have found debris in mine when I redid them.
The stock ones didn't have a sleeve. (most rebuilt ones now have sleeves).
For honing, I just used some scotchbrite in a circular motion to remove the staining on the sleeve, and it's been working great for me.

O-ring style calipers have an o-ring around the piston, compared to the stock style which has a lip on the piston. It's reccommended that you rebuild with the o-ring style, as it eliminates the problems that lip style seals have (sucking air). The pistons have to be changed with the swap.

Hope this helps

ordered my seal kit from a parts supplyer in town and have a problem with the outer seal on caliper.

my original outer seals are thicker than the ones that came with the seal kit,i cant get the new thinner ones to hold in the caliper, the older ones that im replacing go right in and stay with no problem.

i have messedup two new outer seals trying to get them in,they just wont go in

i ordered my caliper seal kit for a 1980 vett and now i see my calipers have been replaced with stainless steel ones, could it be that this seal kit only fits original calipers that came on the car?

piston seal fit good
outer seals dont go in at all, where they press into the caliper new ones are way thinner their at the metal at the top of the outer seal wont stay in or come close to even going in.

caliper says DELCO on it

could use some advice on this

Yes I screwed two of my new seals putting them in....had to reuse old seals. Make sure the recess that the seal fits in is spotless, and apply a small amount of lube to the outside of the seal and drive it in (gently) with a small piece of abs pipe....learned that right here on the forum. Try and get the leading edge of the seal in all the way around before seating the seal for good

thanks for the help

these new outer seals seem to be a lesser quality part compared to originals in this caliper.
