Do you have to have tech skills on auto transmissions?

Not that hard but pay attention to the gaskets and linkages , take pics before you take the valve body off , and I mean pay attention to the way the gaskets are , and where you drill the holes in the spacer, not hard , I used a Transgo basic shift kit cause I don't race mine or abuse it it is fine, I think I paid $50 for it, Ron

It's a messy job any way you cut it. Use a Trans-Go kit. Drill the spacer plate per the instructions (don't get creative by thinking is a little is good a lot is better) then use a really big bit (I use a 1/2) by hand to carefully de-burr the holes. You can stick the checkballs back in place in the case with vaseline. Bolt the valve body back on and carefull torque the bolts in sequence. It'd also be a good time to replace the modulator. There is also a little screen in the feed to the governor- don't leave it out and make sure it's clean.
The kit also changes the spring in the pressure regulator, so you'll need a good pair of snap ring pliers to get it out. New filter and fluid and have fun.

I intalled a B&M kit in my 80' in probably 1981 or so. One of the biggest Improvments for the Buck You can Make I uses'd the Street strip intall. Most all of the Trans Guys will never recoment the B&M but I beileive that they (or did) have the best Instructions for somebody who has never done Trans work before. After a Drive a couple of Freinds had me intall the same kit in there Vettes too. At the time I was renting a Gas station Lift for the Install that was 20 Miles from my House so if something went wrong I was totaly Screwed. Nothing did.

Nothing wrong with the B&M kit except the price. I've always used Trans-Go kits in everything from a 125(sidewinder) to a 700R4 and everything in between. Never a problem
