Default DISTRIBUTOR WORRIES

Hi all,
First off, thanks for all the help so far. I have most of all my issues worked out and I have not even taken the car apart yet. I know I will have problems when disassembling, but atleast I will have all my parts figured out!

How much would I benefit from HEI? I have a Petronix ignitor instead of points and it seems to better. I am worried that my rebuilt motor will need more spark than I have. Should I just go with a MSD box and big coil? I am building the motor from Chevy High Performance. (http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/editorial/article.jsp?id=46370& viewtype=text). What do you guys think? Recommend?

I installed a used GM HEI unit in my 73 454 and it works perfect. I happen to have a spare HEI unit. I would be willing to trade or sell.

Did you hook up the factory tach? I would like to retain my factory tach. I really don't want to buy the HEI with a tach gear.. it is like $500. I just don't know if I need a HEI??????

Were they not able to run 400 + HP motors on points back in the 60's and 70's?? hmmmm if they could do it then ..I guess I can do it now

Alwyn- I know they used to run big numbers with points, but they also used to run with bias ply tires, that does not mean I what to use them. I was looking for the members that switched to HEI and if they saw it as an advantage over pts. I know pts can sometimes be tempermental and I thought my power increase would demand to much for my existing ballast coil setup.... Thanks for the sarcasm... it made me laugh :D

Mr.Gearhead,
The HEI is probably better than your stocker with points but a downside is no more tach, I like the GM transistorized with MSD box and coil (but thats just me) and a used TI distributor is worth almost as much as a new MSD (at a good deal). If you want to sell the factory tach drive distributor i am a buyer. .....redvetracr

I am think of getting rid of the Petronix setup. I am REALLY thinking of buying the tach drive HEI. I want the technology and the car to look original on the inside..

REDVETRACR, if I do decide to sell it, I will include the petronix ignitor with it . How much do you wanna pay... seriously! I not looking to gouge a fellow member.... i'll sell it cheap! my email is bendera1@attbroandband.com
