Default catalytic converter and muffler

Hi, i have a 82 corvette and i want o do some muffler work on it. i have two choices. one choice is to change the coverter with a magnaflow converter or change the mufflers with magnaflow mufflers. This is wat i am expecting from the change. More horse power and sweet, deep, awsome sound. what shoud i change to achieve this goal. converter or muffler? i am gonna use magnaflow product. at the same time i want to know what the outcome will be if i change both converter and muffler. thanks

I got rid of the converter and put a true dual exhaust in with magnaflow mufflers and it has been awesome... try a shift kit at the same time if you have an automatic (mine is a 79)

Ya... unless you live in CA - go to a true dual exhaust sans converter.

take the cat off.use a long rod to knock out the old crap .now it is a test pipe put it back on. cost is zero .now put on the mufflers of your choice.

You can do that.. they call it a "test pipe" - but I'd replace the system with a true duel-exhaust all the way from the manifolds to the mufflers.
Then you get the benifit of increased flow etc etc.

yes going to a duel exhaust is best but it also is the most expensive.i have looked at the one that mid america sells for $230 dollars [603-864]but is it that much better for the street ?

I believe the 82's used a cat all to there own, and to get the stock replacement would not be easy. No matter what You do you may want to hang on to it as it may be valuble one day.

Your 82 is like my 80 where the exhaust runs down one side and under the crossmember which makes it an easy swap. 6 bots at the manifolds and the rest is hangers with no need to touch the cross member.

If it were my car I'd pull your entire exhaust and get one of the dual kits for your car. If you have the stock tube exhaust manifolds they flow pretty good but I think they are still a 2" outlet. Get the exhaust now and maybe change the manifolds in the future. Getting the old style pellet Cat out of there will help and lot.

On my 80 I now run Sanderson cast iron headers for great flow without the header leaks and heat. I then run 2.5" tubes to a single 3" pipe and then back to 2.5" up to the mufflers. Makes a lot more power now and this is what I run for track days. I also tack welded cat shields to the 3" pipe to make it look stock.
