I found some non-stock things when taking my 1968 rear end apart. I'm going to post a set of (what I take for true) statements - if one is wrong please tell me.
I do own an assembly manual - I just can't find it (yet) since the move to SC.
1. The swingarm bolts have a plain washer on the bolt end and on the nut side it's a plain washer and and then a lockwasher before the nut goes on.
2. The 2 bolts that go through the front of the differential mount go in from left to right and have no washers - just the castle nuts and pins.
3. The big rear wheel flange nut washer goes in with the flat side toward the bearing and the "rounded" side toward the nut.
4. There is no "left or right" to the half-shafts - nor "front to back" to a driveshaft. Ditto all yokes and flanges.
5. You can change the std. transmission tail seal without removing the tranny - once the driveshaft is out of the way.
I'll post a follow-up question. Does the differential crossmember have a front/back?
Yes, I marked it to be sure it goes back the same; but it's been off once, so I have no proof the other guy put it in right? (assuming it matters)
#4: I hope not as mine (basketfulls) are not marked. #5: yes as soon as it quits pouring all the lube on your hands, and floor. Be careful not to distort the lip as you seat it (with the proper GM tool, NEVER a close fitting socket! )
4. There is no "left or right" to the half-shafts - nor "front to back" to a driveshaft. Ditto all yokes and flanges.
There is no left right on the halfshafts, nor an inner or outer end. The driveshaft was balanced and matched with the transmission yoke as a set, so yes the there is a front. The diff input yoke also had a paint mark that was matched with a corresponding mark on the driveshaft for balancing purposes.
If all that has been lost, be prepared to swap things around if you notive vibration.
Hmmmmm...... I did note a weight that was spot welded to the driveshaft. It was at the rear end of the shaft. Is that the normal end for it?? As for the others - they were lost before my time as the u-joints were replaced once before me - and then there's age obliterating marks.
AFAIK, there could be a weight at either end, or both, or neither depending on what the particular shaft needed to fall within limits. If you found it at the rear then put it back the same way and see what happens.
