I was given a 1996 350 with fuel injection and was wondering if it is a good idea to put it on my 78 vette? I want to keep the original block since in the vette but transfre over the intake and fuel injection and possibly stroke it as well. would this be better than keeping it carburated?
It's going to be a lot more work to add fuel injection to the engine. You will need an electric fuel pump, wiring and plumbing, wiring and mounting for the computer, possibly electric fans for the radiator, and an intake system. If you have the skills to do this I'd say go for it, but if you don't then stick with a carb.
The 96 engine has reverse-flow cooling, which means that the intake won't work with your block. You'll need to use the entire LT engine to make it work.

It will not work on the 78 engine. As far as changing to fuel injection I highly recomend it. It does take some work and knowledge of the systems but it runs so much better than a carbed motor. Change the whole motor over and bag up the original for the future.
