May be a dumb one, but I presently have my dash out and want to paint the center cluster bezel and shifter console plate. How is this best accomplished without painting the chrome. Anyone done this? Any help appreciated!
Paint the whole thing, and then remove the paint off the chrome using a razor blade and/or a cloth or q-tip with lacquer thinner. Just take your time, and it'll turrn out great.
Pedro's got it. I used the razor blade first because it was pretty easy to smear the paint with the reducer. But I did have to get some areas with the reducer anyway. It's really pretty easy to do and like he said, comes out great.
Paint does not want to adhere to chrome. You could let it dry well & use fine steel wool w/ chrome polish. Using razor blades on chrome should be avoided if possible.
I done this on other small parts..but not on a bezel..should work though! If your good with a X-acto knife, you could tape off the chrome edges with a good masking tape. Don't fold it over the edges..and trim the excess off. :D :D
I plan on doing my bezel before next spring. I was going to clean with diluted Simple Green and the paint with Kylon Semi-Flat Black paint. I was planning on taping the chrome but is it better to paint over the chrome and scrap off? That sounds like it has disaster written all over it.
MAN! What's up with the forum? I have been tring to respond all afternoon. Thanks everyone for your help. I will paint the pieces tonight and try the steel wool thing after they are dry. I did try taping them the other night but do not have the patience for such. Thanks again!
MNJack - Like that car of yours too! The 454 is the best thing I ever did to my car!Should have done it two years ago before going through complete overhaul of previous motor. (That's a whole other story) Only have a little over 500 miles on it but can't wait for warmer weather. Its different than the 427 but I can already tell it's going to be even sweeter!
I repainted my 71's console last year. First, I stripped off the old paint with acetone. I then used 1/8" vinyl pinstriping from Autozone to mask all the edges that I did not want to paint. Took awhile, but I did not want to go the paint and scrape or rub off route. It turned out great! One thing I would do differently is to use a paint adherer (sp?) on the plate after stripping. The entire plate is chrome so you really could use something to get the paint to stick. There is a product called Bulldog that I have used since with good results. Comes in a spray can.
When I did mine years ago, I used a Q-tip to CAREFULLY apply vaseline to the chrome edges. It is thick enough so it won't run and after you paint the pieces and let the paint dry, just wipe it off. It was much quicker and easier that the razor blade method and worked great.
