Default U-Joint Sizes on 82??

Got the half shafts and main drive shaft off the car. Seems to me the main drive shaft u joints look to be a different size than the half shafts.. Little smaller..

Problem, is I am being told by the auto part stores is they carry one size u joint for all 6 u joints (main and half shafts). Is this correct?

I have read some posts, where GM put different size u joints on different years. Not sure if that had to do with 4 speed vs automatic or not.

Can I use the same size u joint for all 6 or are they definately a different size from the half shafts vs the main shaft?
Thanks,
R

They are not all the same size.
The halfshaft joints are larger.

Yep, that is what I thought.. But I figured the auto part stores were smarter than me. Maybe not in this case....... Need to figure out a plan b and try to get the right u joint size. It had spicers on as the OEM part, but they seem to be very tuff to find. If I cant walk into a store and buy them, I'm not interested in ordering.

I just recently did all the u-joints in my 82. I have FE7 gymkhana suspension in the rear. The u-joints on the halfshafts are 1 3/16 dia bearing caps, the drive shaft is 1 1/16 dia cap, if I recall correctly. So they're probably like mine...

The 82 halfshafts got the larger 1350 U-joints and the driveshaft got the 1310 U-joints.

In 80-81 year cars, only the manual transmissions got the larger 1350 U-joints and the automatics got the smaller 1330 U-joint in the halfshafts. They stepped it up in 82 I assume due to the fact that the 700R4 transmission has such a low first gear.

Check out Duntov Motors website 80-82 driveline page for good info on the sizing of U-joints.

Spicers are the best, but hard to find. I can also recommend BruteForce U-joints and have used them for many moons with good success. Here are the 82 parts list:

BruteForce models are:
1-0153BF: 1310 U-Joint (Driveshaft)
2-0053BF: 1350 U-Joint (Half-shaft)

Spicer models are:
5-785X for driveshaft (1310 series)
5-799X for half shafts (1350 series)
