Default What socket do I need to turn crank?

What size socket do I need to turn the engine over by hand? Trying to bump it around to get to TDC is way too frustrating. So I'm just going to pull all the spark plugs out but #1 and pull it around with a wrench till I hit TDC.

yeah thats a good Idea for timming, what you do is open your socket drawer , Pick a big one 1/2" drive preferably, try it on the Nut, if it fits you got it, if not try another size.

if you have someone that is capeable of turning the key while its in the ignition, simply remove the number one plug and the coil wire, insert your finger into the open plug hole, have the other person turn the key until your finger is forced out of the hole...now you should be able to see the timing mark very near the 0 degree reference, then simply adjust with socket.

I was at work when I posted, I was going to stop by the store if it required something that I didn't have.

Yup, tried to bump it close by myself, it was annoying and a pain. The wife can't grasp the concept of bumping the ignition (she kept hitting the gas and trying to actually start it), and she wouldn't stick her finger in the hole.

If the engine is in the car:

If the engine is on the stand:

Another option is a bump switch; they make ones that can be installed or just attach to the starter soleniod.

I don't think I would have told anyone that.

do it yourself
bump starter button from autozone.
find the purple wire going down the passengers side to the starter
hook one side of the pushbutton to the purple wire and the other side to the alternator lug.

A good way to find it is to pull the dist cap, assuming the engine is in that car and is working, just mark the dist base by the #1 plug, then bump the engine around inside the car till the rotor contact is pointing towards the #1 mark, you can fine tune the adjustment with the power steering pulley by hand, assuming your belt is tight. pull all the plugs, #1 as well, no advantage to leaving it in i can see. C.

Do you have a manual or an auto tranny ?
With manual transmission, it's VERY easy. Put the car on an horizontal surface. Engage 4th speed and push the car forward or backward by rotating a front wheel clockwise or counterclockwise. You can reach TDC mark at less than 1°, even with all spark plugs in, and you don't need to be SuperMan !
With an auto tranny, huum

What I did to get it this screwed up was mark the location of the rotor and the disty, pull it out to replace the tach drive gear and the main shaft. I tried to put it back in just the way I took it out. I jacked it all up.... but at least my tach moves now

I got the leaving plug #1 in thing from an article that I read. It said that if you take all plugs out but #1 you will be able to tell you are on the #1 compression stroke as your turning it becuase its gets rougher to turn due to the compression in the cylinder.

Yeah I started to just say that she wouldn't cover the spark plug hole with her finger while I bump the ignition.... but I htought a little humor was better.
