How do they work? Can I get a broke/rusty bolt out with one? How much do they cost? where do I get one?
I have broken the thermostat housing bolt off flush with the intake...I need to get it out...If I have to drill and retap the bolt, my car will have to go up to a shop, because I don't have the tools/skill to do that...
Easy outs are not all that difficult to use but they dont always work.
You can buy them at Sears or any other quality hardware store. You drill down into the center or the bolt pop in your easy out apply pressure and back it out.
Sometimes it works and sometimes it dosent. It's hard to tell....
They also make some reverse cutting drill bits that help the process along a little bit. They are very hard to find though.
I wish you good luck. I had the same problem last year. I tried using an EZ-Out and it broke off in the bolt. I decided to pull the intake and take it to a shop. One of the intake manifold bolts near the water pass through snapped while I was removing the manifold. Once the manifold was off I noticed my intake valves were gunked up with oil. Since I had been fouling some plugs I pulled the heads for a rebuild and manifold bolt removal. When I removed the exhaust manifolds I noticed they were cracked near the front bolt hole. An easy thermostat change resulted in rebuild heads, brazed/cleaned exhaust manifolds, and a repaired/cleaned intake manifold not to mention a lot of fun. Better Luck to you!
hmm...I'll let my dad do the ez out...he said he's done one before...plus if he brakes it off I can have him pay for the machine shop visit. Did I say that outloud? :blueangel: :blueangel:
An easy out looks like a drill bit, but the spiral flutes on the shaft are a reverse twist. Depending on the size of the bolt and the easy out you intend to use, you drill a specific size hole down into the bolt. Care must be taken in your case not to drill too deep, but deep enough to get the "meat" of the e-out down into the bolt. After the hole is drilled, you reverse twist the e-out down into the bolt. As you reverst twist (counter clockwise) the e-out bites into the bolt and backs it out. Use plenty of penetrating oil first... You can buy an easy out kit just about any Home Improv store. Includes 4-5 sizes of drill bits and E-out's. But beware.. there are some cheapies out there that will break quite easily. I get mine individually from Grainger through work, and they are of excellent quality. Good Luck
well I mean it busted because my thermostat housing was leaking so I went to tighten it a little turn, and snap...I just assume its rusted because when I put it in, it went in with a fight(wasn't cross threaded)...I'll probably have to have it drilled and tapped. :cuss :cuss

PS. If I take the car to a mechanic that can drill and tap, how much do you think Im looking at?(I'd have him drill and tap the screw, check my work, and make sure its running good before I get it back).
