Hello,
So lately i've pretty much just getting myself familiar with the car, taking her apart and putting her back together. I've decided to get a new carburetor, but i was wondering what I should look into when looking for a carburetor.
I have a 1978 L82 Pace Car vett all stock.
Any suggestions, im looking for an emission legal carburetor?
You cannot buy a better carb for your car than the one that came on it.
If it needs to be rebuilt, then do it. If it doesn't, then spend your money elsewhere.

AGREED ! ...And if you do get it rebuilt, and the young punk dosen't ask you for your distributor also, FIND AN OLD TIMER that knows what he's doing ! The carb and the distributor need to be synched. You can actually chance things inside the HEI distributor to get more HP w/o affecting the stock quality.....SAVE ALL OF THE PARTS.

The Rochester Quadrajet can't be beat. It will give performance equal to any "hot rod" carb, and give you good fuel economy at the same time if it is set up by someone who knows what they are doing. Any aftermarket carb is downgrading.
Yet another Get it rebuilt by one of the performance shops (not your local shop) and invest in a tune - you'll get everything the car is capable of for performance.

I don't mean to jump the thread, but I was considering putting a Eldelbrock carb & intake combo on mine. Do your guys think the stock carb would work better on the Eldelbrock performer intake, or should I get the Edelbrock carb too?

I'm not sure what it means to have the distributor "synched" with the carb. It is a good place to tune for better driveability and performance but the same guy doesn't necessarily need to do both parts.

The Q-Jet is the better carb. There are a lot of problems with the Edelbrock carb and the Q-Jet will be the better choice no matter what intake you choose (providing you can get the Q-Jet mounted).
If you want the best Q-Jet rebuild, here is the guy-
Be prepared to tell him your combo including camshaft specs, rear diff ratio, etc. He'll send it back to you perfectly set up for your car. And I do mean perfect.

An Edelbrock spread bore intake is perfect for a Quadrajet. The Edelbrock (Carter) carb design was deemed obsolete by GM in the '60s. I'll say it again, any aftermarket carb you buy is downgrading.
Quadrajets are the best. Three days ago, my '78 with a 406 sbc, and an 800 Q-jet ran an 11.74 sec quarter with open exhaust, 3.08 gears and air conditioning. Sixty foot time was 1.79. What's not to like?
