My 69 sb appears to have a performance cam in it (person I bought the car from could not confirm) and according to my shop, this very likely is causing strong exhaust fumes and not much can be done about it. Does this sound correct? If so, would putting a stock cam in correct the problem? Thanks in advance!
SOme depends on what carb you have. IT could be anything from the float being saturated, float level incorrect, power valve wrong, or just plain jetted wrong. JUst having a high performance cam does not necessarily make the exhaust stink. If it did, you wouldn't be able to see probably 1/2 the Vettes out there becasue the exhaust would make your eyes burn so bad.
69's didn't have any emission controls so they are going to smell different from newer cars no matter what cam you put in. Gasoline is very different from what it was in 69 also so the exhaust smell is a little unpredictable. I guess you either have to get used to it or sell the car. I don't think changing the cam is going to make a huge difference but I could be wrong.
Edit: Re-reading your post, does your shop have an exhaust gas analyzer? They should be able to tune your engine for the proper air/fuel mixture to minimize rich/lean conditions that would contribute to excessive exhaust odor. If the shop didn't suggest adjusting the fuel mixture to correct the problem I'd look for another shop.
