Default exhaust

Was thinking of running true duals, I got this little problem with other people working on my car...any of my cars including my daily beater, so I saw pre-fab pipes in one of the vette suppliers, for true duals for I believe a 74 stingray..,I got an 80 thought they should work any one try this before?

Earlier models have a dual ex. crossmember. 80 does not so yours would need changes. Some have done a good job on 80 duals & may post.

I have a 76 and put on true duals for a 74. When I did it 3 years ago my county required an emissions test for my car. After asking alot of questions I decided on the duals with a cat welded into each pipe. Since I don't have a lift or a welder I bought the parts and had a local muffler shop put it on. Two of the guys at the shop have classic cars and they did a great job and they said the pipes fit well and went on easily.

There is an active thread right now by a guy in Ontario, Canada, 1989coupe who is looking into putting his exhaust back to stock because of local roadside emissions equipment inspections. You should probably check it out. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...-question.html

I passed the emissions test easily and with the cats I am complying with at least the sprit of the law.

Default True Duals

Here in Il. (USA) this old of a car doesn't get tested . My mufflers were falling off . Got 2 stock aluminized from Eckers for 169 $ . Went to Discount Muffler in Palatine . They cut the down tubes from eack bank and ran 2 1/2 back to the mufflers .
A work of art of tube bending , all joints welded and added support just forward of the diff.
all for 300 $
love it !

P.S. remember , no cat. required here ...

The exhaust passes thru a frame crossmember. The earlier model years had 2 holes for dual exhaust. I just looked it up and 79 was the last year for the two hole frame. I think for an 80 you would need to cut out the cross member and weld one in from an earlier year. You may be able to cut the 2nd hole but you will need to do a fair amount of research before you attempt it.

I believe that even though we don't have to get emissions tests on old cars in Chicagoland anymore the law still prohibites emissions equipment modifications. If a cop wanted to be a jerk you could get a ticket if you don't have a cat on a car that had one when it left the factory.

Falconview,
Appreciate you comments on my cam change...now maybe I can help on your dual question. When I put duals on my '80 I pulled the xmber and "notched" the driver's side to allow clearance. You only need about a 1.25" cut and then I welded a reenforcing plate. See pics.

I just took advantage of Corvette Central's free shipping to Canada(likely expired now) and installed one of their pre-fab 2.5" systems on my 74.It installed and fit well and only took a couple of hours for me to install with the car on jackstands. However in your case,a good local muffler shop would be the way to go,because you will need cats to avoid harassment in the police state of Ontario and a bit of fabrication to get around that crossmember issue.Ask around,I'm sure there is a hi-perf/hot rod friendly shop in your area that will do the job right.

I've posted many times about the true dual exhaust for my '80 including the cross member mod I did myself. I've posted pictures and detailed instructions. Here are a couple of the links:

A little off topic, but I was wondering if someone could tell me the thickness of the steel found on the crossmember.

Just wondering for welding specs.

You should be able to squeeze the 2.5 duals in that space on the passenger side. Its not as nice and custom as Brents though. The kits I have seen from the vendors should fit, but if you get headers, you might need to have the local shop customize.
