Default J56 Caliper brackets

Recently purchased a set of the caliper reinforcement brackets used when upgading to J56 brake calipers. The numbers stamped onto the bracket are 3948880. I beleive these to be correct and original. (possible more than one style was made). The problem I have is the bracket lines up to the three mounting points, but the only bolt hole that is the correct size is at one end of the bracket (the others are too small). Easy to say just drill out the other bolt holes, but if you have ever priced a set of original brackets, you would think twice. Any feedback on where the problem lies would be appreciated.

What year car are you working on?

880 and 879 is for 69 to 72.
The center bolt and the one that drops down is the same size hole which bolts to the caliper brace bracket. The other end is smaller is bolted to one end of the caliper.

Thanks, Grant

The car is a 1972. The problem I have is all 3 bolt hole sizes are the smaller bolt size that would attach to the caliper.

Hi

Your brackets are most probably remanufactured units.
This can be seen on the numbering. If I remember right, the original numbers where higher than the brackets and the remanufactured numbers where cut into the brackets.
You need to ream the holes to the correct size.
Check first how good they align before you decide to ream them. In worst case, you need to ream them in situe using the existing car holes as guides.

Good luck. Günther
