Got a '76 and recently started getting a vibration in the steering wheel. It doesn't seem to be speed dependant (probably above 10 mph, but doesn't seem to get worse at higher speeds) and it's not always excessive, but usually is. I've balanced the tires and checked the alignment (not spot-on perfect, but acceptable!) When driving, I can let go of the wheel and car stays pretty straight, but the steering wheel will just vibrate back and forth like 10* (an approximation). Had car on lift, and looked things over, but nothing is jumping out at me. A-arms, bushings, tie rod ends, etc... all seem fine.
Any ideas of what I can look for? Would a problem w/ the steering box do something like this?
could be shifted belt in the tires, they don't always jump out at you, run your hand over tire feel for irregularities. The kicker here is you said u feel it at low speeds...thats usaualy a tire u may even try rotating them. I you store your car for periods of time ca create a small flat spot.

Funny you should mention that, b/c I just replaced all the tires and the front tires definitely had shifted belts ( tread pattern was like looking into a fun house mirror!) After putting on the new tires (all corners) there were no issues, then about 2 weeks later this weird vibration started.
<<<schmegeggie>>> Got a 10 spot on the ball joints
* I don't know what that means....????
well re torque the tires to be safe, and I have had issues after installing new tires...the word "new" is not always a safe word thats why we have warranties and exchange policies
Thanks for the clarification... wasn't familiar w/ the lingo
Any sure-fire way to tell if it's the ball joints, besides visually damaged?
Thanks!
Jack up car till tires are just off the ground. Grab wheel at 9 and 3 o'clock position and try to pull and push it to get it to move. Also, use a crowbar under the tire and try to lift the car from the 6 o'clock position. Any movement is bad.
