rear tail-light sockets?

rear tail-light sockets?
ok i am taking apart the whole rear end assembly on my 1980 and removed the gas tank for cleaning and paint under the rear deck lid.
here is what i found-rear tail light sockets
drivers side=2
passanger side=3
somebody spliced another tail light socket on the passanger side rear harness the one pluged into my tail light matches the other side but it has been spliced to.why would they splice another tail light socket into the one that works and just leave it laying under there hooked up and doing nothing?
OR AM I MISSING SOMETHING ON THIS CAR-i really dont know
there is only spose to be 4 tail light sockets correct?the oddball socket doesnt match none of the others.

it is spliced into one of the left tail light sockets with tape on it
cant find where it would plug into anything
is the courtisey light for the spare tire as big as the tail light socket?
