anybody know what the machine shops use to clean heads and blocks??
I want to clean a set of heads and our local shop is a little backed up due to upcoming race season. thought if I knew what the cleaner was I could do them myself!

The solution that is used in hot tanks comes in dry powder form and is quite expensive 600$ per drum ,,, the majority of rebuilders are using a rotary wash type system . If you have some sort of container that you could submerge a cylinder head ,purchase a gallon can of gunk concentrate and follow the on can directions ! Let em soak and you will get good results without heat .

PS how close are you to coudersport ??

i have 2 4x4x8 tanks in my shop. one is a caustic soda solution that i keep at 170. it takes off paint, oil, grease, etc. i pay .31 a pound. we buy 500 lbs at a time which is a 55 gallon drum full. it comes in pellets or flake or liquid. the pellets are 80% the flake is 84% the liquid is 65%. the 2 tank is a brightner solution it is left at room temp. it removes rust. it costs 1.22 a gallon. i also get it in 55 drums. it is a mix of several chem. we have a 8x8x8 water bath we use between each operation. tank one, wash, tank 2,wash, back to tank 1 to nutralize the brightner, then a final wash. we then spray the part down with quad lube. this is a teflon base oil. cast iron is porus like a spunge when heated it opens up lets dirt out, this is also the time to treat the metal to prevent rust. have been doing this for over 20 years and the parts come out looking like brand new, right out of the mold. this whole process takes about 30 min for what we call normal such as a typical head. a really bad rusted or carboned up piece can take 3 or 4 hours. in my business we have to clean parts very fast no time for fooling around. robert
