Hey everyone, I have a question about my fuse box on my 82. The fuse for the radio, interior lights and power locks ect.. blew and melted, yes melted the surrounding plastic on the panel. I tryed cleaning out the fuse pocket but its all completely infused together, and I can only pull small pieces out!
1. Why has this happend?
2. I cant see a way to pull off the box.
3. Has his happend to anyone else? and how can I fix it?

The power locks and lights should have been on a 20 amp fuse. The stereo should have been on its own.
Sounds like too much power went through the fuse. Did you have a 20 amp in there?
This usally happens when you draw too much power for accessories through a circuit that can not handle it. Either that or the fuse used was much higher then 20 amps.
Either way not much you can do with the why now. If its damaged to badly you may have to replace the fuse panel.
Are you sure the problem is in the panel and not behind the panel. Could be a shorted wire that caught fire.
I have no idea on how to remove the fuse panel maybe someone else will.
Radio is 10amp.
To replace the fuse box, and do it right, you pretty much gotta replace the entire dash harness
Check with Lectric Limited, probably about $700
check this out to see if im right on this information (not sure)
i think to get the fuse panel out from under the dash you have to go under the hood and down below the power break booster on the firewall just on the other side of the fuse panel you will see a big plug with a bolt or two in it mabe screws i pulled my engine on my 1980 and redid the harness on the firewall i think i saw a screw or two holding this connector to the fuse block just on the otherside of the firewall.
check to be sure AND MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY WHEN YOU MESS WITH THIS, SINCE IT SEEMS YOU HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM IN THAT AREA.
i dont know if this will help you but wont hurt to look and see if im right
Ok I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not but I took the radio fuse out and it was not blown. So could that other fuse be the culprit of the radio not working too? It seemed like all of it happend on the same day.
edit: Thanks for your replies! and killer454 I will take a look at it.
Thanks, Dominic

i would say you are going to have to buy a new harness for this car.
you are going to have to find out what circuits in the fuse panel melted and start there.
you have to fix fuse panel and wires to it before doing anything else (this could mean new harness around 600-900 us dollars.
putting a 30amp fuse in the fuse panel is a no,no it may have not blown that fuse but the actual amount of current will make wires hot and melt together thus melt the fuse panel.
allways run correct size fuses in fuse panel.
another thing to think about you could have fried the sterio when all this shortedout.
Hey, thanks man! Iv been looking for a diagram. I just got a new head unit and I wired it up and its not getting any power. I checked the radio fuse and its good. So could this be caused buy the other fuse that blew? right now my interior lights, the power locks, radio and the cig lighter wont work.
