Backfiring
I have a 4 speed 73, every time I downshift I have a backfiring out of my drivers side exhaust. This didn't start until I installed some long tube headers and new exhaust pipes. I know I have a small exhaust leak in the header gasket on that side that I keep on meaning to fix.... could this be the problem, or is it my valve springs and has nothing to do with upgrades?

Header leaks will definitely cause backfires. Fix that and the problem will likely go away.
