Rotor disc sanding kit?
I have to replace a leaking caliper, someone said to get a rotor disc sanding kit at the local parts store and that it makes a swirl pattern on the rotor to help the pads seat better. Anyone ever heard or tried this?
I'll be installing new organic pads.
Thanks, PG.
If your rotors are not scored and are clean & smooth, I'd put the new pads on and drive.
I've seen some info on sanding the rotors to rough up the surface but 3 or 4 hard stops and the rotors are going to be right back where they were before the surface got sanded.
If the rotors are bad enough to need sanding, they probably need to be turned/replaced anyway.

Squeaks.
Thanks for the quick reply, I'll just replace the pads as the rotors are good. Next question, when I coast into my garage at 1 mile per hour and apply the brakes they squeak, Also very embarrassing at the local shows, would chamfering the leading edge of the pads eliminate that squeak? I never hear any noise pulling up to a light or stopping any other time, only when I apply the brakes going very slow.
PG.

OK, thanks again. I got that today too. Weather man says it will be 65* at day break tomorrow (been 85 and humid the last 2 weeks) so my mission is to replace the bad caliper, repack the front bearings (been 35,000 miles) and install new pads. I'll let you know how it goes. Goodnight! PG.

Just to follow up.
TimAt-took your advice, rotors had no groves so I left them as they were and I replaced the bad caliper and new pads on both left and right front.
Van Steel-Great link and many reasons why not to resurface our rotors.
63mako-good tip, put the high temp grease on the leading and trailing edge of the pads and also where the pistons contact the pads.
GTR 1999-I went to NAPA and asked for a 100 grit pad that would fit on a D/A. They had no clue as to what a D/A was, and neither did I, they did offer to sell me a $1,500.00 rotor turning lathe. They said the new rotors come with a swirl pattern but there was no way for me to duplicate it.
Did find one more problem, the left rubber line was cracked on the outside but not leaking so I replaced that too. That was 9 years old.
So thanks to everyone's input I can stop normally and no leaks in the garage, at least for now.
Thanks to everyone for your help, PG.
Leave the rotors in the same position as found. The reason for the swirls or sanding is to eliminate wear in period. A good non-directional finish will help stopping distance and pulling when appling brakes.
