Default Removed play from Steeroids!

I've had Steeroids for a few years. At first they were almost too quick. I had to concentrate to not move the steering wheel because every movement I made caused an amplified directional change to the car. I got use to tho and grew to even like it.

Then the Steeroids started to loosen up. A little was welcomed at first, but the looseness increased until I had more than an inch of sloppy free movement in the steering wheel before any directional change. Then 502Stingray posted a "Tired of Steeroids Rack..." thread saying his Steeroids "had play and felt 'loose'". Gale Banks 80 suggested checking the bottom bearing in the steering column. I can see how a loose bottom bearing would result in play, so I mentally jumped on that idea.

I checked vertical and horzontal play in the bottom bearing: nothing that would cause more than an inch of free play. Then I checked the torsional play in the u-joint chain. FOUND IT! I noticed the u-joints had "kinks" in the joints instead of a smooth curve from steering shaft to the support bearing.

To fix the problem, I simply loosened the lock nut and set screw, tapped the upper u-joint further onto the steering column shaft, and re-tightened the set screw and lock nut. The kinks in the u-joint chain were gone and so was the free play.

Now I need to concentrate on NOT moving the steering wheel again.

I had an issue awhile ago. It was the center bolts that hold the bracket to the rack. One was completly gone the other one was loose.
