Does anyone have comments good or bad about the VBP c3 Rack n Pinion conversion kit? Things like did it clear your headers? Does it give more room were the steering box was? Do you get a notchy feel sometimes from the steering shaft joints used?
There is another post on this very subject. I have installed 3 units. 2 Steeroids and 1 VB rack. They are almost identical with minor tie rod end differences. I have Hooker Super Comps and no header clearancing was needed. The other two cars have Hooker side pipes and dimpling of one header tube was needed. Not bad but there is a little clearnce issue. No notchy feeling once you get the adjustment in line which is no big deal. It is a little quicker than the old box but you get used to it very quickly.
Does anyone have Photos of a Rak n Pinion kit installed? Would like to see it from the top and bottom. Would like to see from the top what kind of clearance to the headers there is.
Here is a photo of the Steeroids u-joints as they fit on a '78 small block with Walker Dynomax headers. What headers are you running? We have a list of the headers on our website here that we know will work. If you have specific questions you can post a photo of your headers and/or give us a call. 940.769.3804 ext 3 for technical info.
SpeedDirect --Thank You for the Photo. I checked your site and my headers are listed as No Problem. I have a 454 big block with Hooker sidepipes. I am hoping that the RacknPinion will give me more clearance near the second header tube. I want to change my Hooker sidepipes for a set of shorty headers and under car exhaust. The shorty headers I want to use are the same I have on my 69 Chevelle SS396. The shorty just hit my steering box now. I could dent them. But it would just be another good reason to do RackNPinion if they would give me more room. Your photo with Measurements for header clearance will be a Great Help.
Another Question is there any negative points to having all those joints in the steering shaft? Do you get a Notchy feel at certain points?
Let us know if you need any further information. If you post a photo of the headers you have on your Chevelle I can take a look at them and give you my opinion on how they will clear. With regard to the steering joints it isn't a problem if they are adjusted correctly. They will and are expected to operate completely smooth and without any binding or notchy feeling. Obviously the smallest number of u-joints is best so it would be nice to only have 2 but in order for this kit to fit all C2 and C3's without permanent modifications and for it to clear the maximum number of headers it was necessary to use a 3 joint design.
Oh yeah, we are having a Labor Day sale on all Steeroids starting this evening and going through the weekend.
Here is a photo of my 69 Chevelle SS396. These are the shorty headers I want to use on my 70 454 vette. It looks like if I dent the second tube it may clear the steering box( need 3/8 to 1/2 of a dent). I am hoping that if I install a rack and pinion it will give me clearence so I may not have to dent the header so much.
I looks to me like you may not have any issues at all but if there are it will be the second tube (#3 cylinder) at the collector area. I think it will be very minor contact if there is any. Let me know if you would like any different photos from different angles.
