Flooding as in excessive raw fuel injection without ignition; or flooding as in only the hood is visible in the pond?
Fuel flooding without ignition will definitely contaminate the oil. Change oil immediately after severe flooding and operate the engine at normal operating temperature to ensure the fuel is removed from oil system. Remove valve covers and visually determine lift on each valve. Sheared distributer gear? Probably not from fuel in the oil. You can check the engine for power loss by doing a leakdown test.
Now if the flooding had water to the bottom of the windshield, that's a different story and engine operation would be the least of your worries!
Sheared distributor gear is a good reason to suspect metal floating around the engine. Won't hurt to pull the pan and check for metal. Adds up to more troubleshooting/diagnosis!

Do you think the gear failure led to flooding?
no, i think the flooding and thinning of the oil caused the gear to shear. i mean, this was a brand new engine with under 2000 miles on it at the time
