I am considering a 406 engine with the BG Sixshooter for my 82 5 speed with possibly 345 rear. Please advise, would like about 500 hp and gobs of torque.

From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
I like multiple carbs, 3 deuces, 2 fours whatever. The Barry Grant Six Shooter is 750cfm total and is probably plenty for a mild 406ci.
What I have been finding in recent threads is these are not your 1960's small blocks anymore, they are more like big blocks. THe torque is going to be there, might as well throw in some parts to make some HP while your at it.
In that budget and with your desire for "gobs of torque" a BBC would definitely be your best buy. But if an SBC is what you're after then there are a couple of approaches.
Considering you're looking at $2400 right out of the gate for induction, you're looking at getting the engine together for $6600. That puts an aftermarket block right at the edge of your budget, and I wouldn't suggest a stock 400 block at those power levels. They're lousy castings to begin with, and by the time you get them squared away with aftermarket caps and machine work you've put a lot of money into an iffy foundation.
If you do a draft budget with an aftermarket block, you've got $2500 in the block, $2K for heads and $2K in a forged rotating ***'y...right at your budget and we haven't bought any of the small parts or machine work yet
A strong 383 would be more in-line with your budget, or you need to stretch your budget a bit to get to your CID and power targets. Tough call - only you can make it.
